Joining a trade or professional association isn’t always a no-brainer. Getting involved with an association takes time and effort that goes beyond their day-to-day work. In addition, the additional cost must be justified.

Stay Current with Changes

Membership helps you keep a finger on the pulse of how the manufacturing climate is growing and changing. The resources available to members help individuals and businesses to stay on top of emerging trends, and the information needed to stay current.

Continue your Professional Development

Often Associations provide courses to help a professional stay current within their discipline. They help professionals and businesses maintain compliance with regulatory changes as well as stay on top of breaking industry trends. These will give you a competitive edge over your competitors. Some associations offer certification programs to distinguish you as a leader.

Access to Resources and Information

Associations often make relevant resources and information readily available to members. This results in increased access to consistently updated resources that pertain to your industry.

Networking

Meet with like-minded professionals with similar interests. Discover connections within your community. Members can connect online, but digital connections are not as strong as those made in person. Have you noticed how face-to-face meetings with a colleague makes future projects run more smoothly? In-person networking is the lubricant that makes collaboration work.

Advocacy

A Group has more power to change an environment and is stronger than at the individual. Associations are the center hub where individuals organize resources, plan strategy, and assign action items. Proponents of social media thought they would replace “brick and mortar.” Platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn make it easier to recognize connections, but they haven’t displaced the power of face-to-face meetings.

Find or Become a Mentor

If you are a person that wants to give back, an Association is a place to start. There are students looking to start a career. Being a mentor is a rewarding experience. You may get eye-rolls from our teenage children when giving them advise, but to a young professional you’ll get rapt attention.

Below is a list of Professional Manufacturing State Associations and chambers of commerce in the United States.

It is worthwhile to keep an eye on their efforts, shows, and legislative endeavors in your state.  At the least, we encourage you to subscribe to their newsletter.
