AS9100D Common Nonconformance’s

January 2018

AS9100 Compliance 80302802During recent months, ASR has shared with clients the common nonconformance's written against recently revised standards. This article reviews AS9100D:2015 nonconformance's written within the last several months by ASR's aerospace auditors.

Few NC's were written against Sections 4 (3 NC's), 5 (NC's), 6 (3NC's) with no NC's written in section 10. A quick summary of the findings found in Sections 7, 8 and 9 may be helpful as organizations continue working with their AS9100D quality system.

What is AS9100?

AS9100-aerospace-and-defense-quality-certification-by-asrFrom the AS9100 registrar.

AS9100 is the quality management systems standard applicable to companies that supply to aerospace and defense industries.

This standard incorporates all of ISO 9001 with additional industry specific requirements for aerospace.

The AS9100 standard was released in October, 1999, by the Society of Automotive Engineers and the European Association of Aerospace Industries.  It replaced the AS9000 released earlier and incorporated the complete version of ISO 9000.  In addition to those requirements it added specific requirements relating to quality and safety.  Most major aerospace manufacturers and suppliers worldwide require their suppliers compliance and/or registration to AS9100 as a condition.

Why do companies pursue an AS9100 certification?
  • Internal operational efficiency through Lower production costs from fewer nonconforming products, reduced rework, fewer rejections, and streamlined
  • Access to new markets because many organizations require AS9100 Registration
  • Customer requirement because many organizations require certification to continue or to begin doing business
  • Reducing costs
ASR can certify your company along the AS9100 standards and ensure your compliance over the long haul.

OASIS Next Generation

aviation Rolls Royce Jet EngineAll current AS9100 and AS9120 certified companies currently are required to have their audits and certificates entered and accurate in the OASIS database. Currently, this process is primarily managed by the Certification Body. ASR uploads and publishes all audit and certificate records after an audit is approved. On December 3, 2016, the IAQG will be releasing the next generation OASIS database.

Initially this will not change much from how the current process works, but once we begin conducting AS9100D or AS9120B audits in 2017 the process with change considerably. Below are some of the major changes in OASIS Next Generation:

AS9100:2016 Update

A timeline presented discusses a Semaphore meeting in April of 2016 which could include the release of the standard. It is expected AS9100 will declare a 3 year implementation plan.

The revised AS9100 standard will call for a high level structure based on ISO 9001:2015 (10 sections), an emphasis on the process approach, risk based thinking, and change management. Additionally, the revised standard will address product safety, counterfeit part prevention, configuration management, awareness and human factors.

AS9100D Update and Transition

August 2016

Transition and alignment of AS9100 to ISO 9001:2015 continues to move forward. At a recent meeting of stakeholders in Fort Worth, TX additional information and clarifications on timing was presented. ASR is required to notify all AS9100 and AS9120 clients of the transition process and requirements.

All ASR clients are required by December 31, 2016 to provide information on their readiness and commitment to transition. Below are the estimated dates for release of information and transition requirements for both ASR and all certified clients.

  • Improve the balance sheet and profitability
  • Enhance global marketability
  • Standardizes on one audit body and eliminates multiple assessments in the aviation industry
The Aerospace Industry demands top product output, including process and service quality. The standard is meant to ensure:
  • Safety
  • Airworthiness
  • Product conformity and reliability
Request a quote for a review or an ISO standards auditThe Aviation Industry is highly regulated with demands and controls that ensure the safety and reliability of equipment and materials. The industry relies heavily on suppliers demonstrating effective management systems. AS 9100 sets the quality levels expected in all areas of aerospace, from commercial to defence aviation. AS 9100 applies to any organization across the Aerospace Industry, working in anything from design and manufacture to maintenance and stock list distributions.

AS9100 Update

We don't expect to see any changes for at least another year with the AS 9100 standard.

What we don't know is how the revisions to the ISO 9001 standard will impact AS 9100C. To date, the Aerospace group has not asked for an exception to the new standard. If they don't obtain an exception, the AS 9100C standard would have to be adjusted to conform to the upcoming revised ISO 9001 standard.

AS 9100 C was implemented in 2011-12 and all ASR clients are now upgraded. AS 9104/1 (the rules) for AS 9100C including the audit day requirement was released in 2012, and all clients are currently being audited to these requirements.
